Florida Shelter Information & Pets in Shelters

Shelters provide a safe, short-term place to weather the storm.

But they are not comfortable and and evacuees should bring medications, bedding, personal items, snacks and water. To identify a shelter in your area, click here or call 3-1-1. 

If you choose to go to a hurricane shelter, please bring the following with you:

  • 3 day supply of water- 2 changes of comfortable clothes
  • Blankets and pillows
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Cell phone and a battery-operated charger
  • Medicines
  • Snacks/Special diet foods
  • Cash
  • Photocopies of valuable documents
  • Games, books and playing cards for entertainment during your stay 

Pets In Shelters

Service animals are permitted in General Population Shelters so long as the pet meets the requirements under Federal law. Visit ADA Requirements for Service Animals for additional information. However, a Pet Friendly Shelter is available for residents owning pets, not considered a service animal, and are living in evacuation areas or mobile homes. Pre-registration may be required.
